Great cabinetry, New Finish

It is truly a shame that so many solid wood cabinets have been torn out and thrown into the waste heap. These solid wood cabinets can be painted, refinished, or refaced for a fraction of the costs of the replacement with new cabinets.

Most of this very good solid wood cabinetry has been replaced with a variety of wood-type products that are of significantly less quality and durability.

Cabinets painting saves money

For a fraction of the cost of refacing, refinishing, or replacing the cabinets can be painted with amazing results. It is amazing what can be done with proper preparation, primer, and a couple of coats of good-quality paint.

Onsite Completion

Most cabinet projects that we do are done onsite whereby all preparation, priming, and painting are completed without taking them to the shop. Usually, we will have a clear space in the garage or the basement to do the work needed. There are occasions, where needed, that we will take the doors and drawers off-site for completion.

Painting method for cabinets

The most cost-effective method of painting for cabinet painting is with a brush and roller with spraying as a more costly option. The brush and roller are the most popular methodology for us, where over 80% of clients opt for this methodology. The finish on the brush and roll projects is not factory finish but in our experience is only slightly less than that of the sprayed option. Both methods look great and would require a close-up inspection to see the actual difference in the finish.

  • Firstly, we proceed to remove all hardware fixtures from both the drawers and doors.
  • Subsequently, each individual drawer, door, and box are sanded to buff the previous coating and prepare the surface for the primer.
  • Next, we apply a coating of high adhesion primer, such as BIN or Kilz, to all areas. While other options, such as Gripper and various acrylic types, may be available for primer, our extensive experience has shown that Kilz or BIN are vastly superior products.
  • Following the complete drying of the primer coat, two full coats of finish are applied, one side at a time, in most cases.
  • Once the finish coats have sufficiently dried, we reinstall the doors and drawers.
  • Following reinstallation, we affix updated handles and knobs. However, there are certain restrictions regarding the selection of handles and knobs, as they must be configured to fit in the same manner as the original hardware.
  • This concludes the entirety of the project.

Timelines

Completing a typical cabinet project generally takes around three days. On the first day, the team will focus on removing the existing cabinets and applying a primer. During this phase, the work area may have a strong odor which can be quickly eliminated with adequate ventilation. The next two days will be spent applying the finish coats, which requires meticulous attention to detail to achieve a flawless result. Finally, the doors and drawers will be reinstalled and aligned, which typically takes 2-4 hours to complete.

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a highly cost-effective way of giving your kitchen a fresh, updated look. In fact, it can cost only 10-20% of what you’d spend on replacing the cabinets entirely, and about 50% of the cost of refinishing or refacing them. This is a fantastic option for those on a budget who want to revamp their kitchen without breaking the bank.
